Abstract

It is well known that some systemic diseases may involve the eye, even more ocular symptoms and disorders may precede systemic complains. For example, alterations of the optic nerve may indicate brain diseases, or vascular changes of the retina may be used as reference for arterial hypertension, atherosclerosis or diabetes. Accumulating evidence suggests that degenerative alterations of the retina (age-related macular degeneration) may be associated with other neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Furthermore, inflammatory diseases of the uvea may be ocular manifestation of some autoimmune diseases
