Dirofilariosis infestation of pectoralis major muscle in Italy, a case report

Abstract

ABSTRACT

This case report describes a young male patient, who complained, in left parasternal region, muscle pain after growth of an ovoidal undefine cyst. Several contacts with different species of animals were confirmed by the patient in the past for a familiar activity.  We decided to hospitalize the patient, and after several routine controls, such as blood exams and ultrasound test, once defined the mass, surgical approach was chosen.

Surgical treatment resulted to be, after histology, definitive and didn’t need any other clinical and surgical approach. Healing time was uneventful. We confirmed with X-chest Ray that, no pulmonary involvement. After five days microbiology confirmed the parasite identity as Dirofilaria Repens.
